People of BTM: Ms. Grewal!

Mrs. Morales, Adviser

Ms. Grewal is a math teacher at BTMS! In honor of AAPI month, Journalism asked if she would share a little about her experience as an Indian Sikh American. Below is her response! Journalism would thank to thank her for her contribution!

Ms. Grewal

I was born and raised in a small rural village of Punjab(India) and migrated to the U.S 16 years ago. As an Indian Sikh American, I feel blessed to have two places to call “home.” A part of me is where I grew up, and another part is here. Both of my cultures are so much different. I grew up in a society where every action of yours is seen as a reflection of your family values, whereas here, each person has the freedom to make their own choices.

One of the challenges that I have faced is getting judged by my skin color and accent. I have been asked, “ Are you local? Will you go back to India after completing the teaching degree? etc.” Although there has been quite a bit of progress, I feel we need to do more. We need to continue the conversations about our prejudices and implicit biases.
