Discipline Policies at BTMS

Are you curious about the school’s protocol for fights/slurs/or bullying?

Since the beginning of the school year, there has been an increase in the use of slurs, fights, and bullying. This year is the first year we have gone to school somewhat normally, so most people have forgotten manners. The first semester showed an increase in this behavior but it seems to have died down. However, while the behavior has improved, it still feels like it is above what a person would expect. We asked our principal, Scott Morrison, about how administration disciplines students.

Is there a protocol for disciplining students who fight, use slurs, bully, etc?

Mr.Morrison- “There is a process that we go through. We did a lot of suspensions, but when we saw that most students who were getting suspensions were people of color, we had to change it. Also, we’ve seen that more male students have been suspended.”

How many reports would you say you get on a weekly basis?

Mr.Morrison-“This year there has been lots more than other years but right now, once every two weeks or once a month.”

What would you say gets the most reported – fights, slurs, bullying, etc?

Mr.Morrison-“I would say the usage of slurs”

Does the behavior change?

Mr.Morrison-“Yes, we see that our actions are effective.”

Why is discipline important?

Mr.Morrison-“You cannot deny discipline, no matter where you are in life. Our job is to discipline children so they can grow and teach them how to live and work together in society.”

Are you aware of how students treat staff?

Mr.Morrison-“I think due to quarantine, students have forgotten how to treat others and act normally, so we are tasked with re-teaching students manners, but yes, I do know”

Thank you for your time!

Mr.Morrison- “Of course!”

Discipline provides people with rules to live their lives efficiently and effectively. When you have discipline in your life, you can make small sacrifices in the present for a better life in the future. Discipline creates habits, habits make routines, and routines become who you are daily. Discipline is really important especially at school because it will help you achieve your goals and be a better person for the future. Discipline brings stability and structure into a person’s life. It teaches a person to be responsible and respectful. The BTM staff is only looking out for you and what’s best for you. They want you to thrive in life, and they teach that through discipline.
