I think we can all pretty much agree that entertainment is a pretty great thing, right? So imagine my surprise when Ms. Shoults, my journalism teacher assigned an assignment to make an article for The Bulldog Brief and in the categories to select what genre it would be, entertainment wasn’t there! I was so distraught by this that I checked, double-checked, triple-checked, and checked one last time for the missing word. But alas, it was gone. Vanished. Vamose. In this article, I will explain how important entertainment can be as a subject matter. And remember, go Bulldogs, GRRRRRR.
For starters, entertainment is, well, entertaining. If it’s something you’re interested in or enjoy you could find yourself laughing along to it and unable to turn away. So maybe you shouldn’t be looking at it during school or an important work meeting- but it is still important for our mental health. If you’re doing something you enjoy then you are a lot more likely to be happier. Entertainment is a building block for all communities throughout the world. Doing things like playing board games, soccer, video games, reading or writing, gladiator fights, hockey-
Wait, back to gladiator fights, how long has entertainment even been a thing? Well, pretty much forever. As long as we have had recorded time there have been fun things we’ve done to pass the time, and even more before that! Some of the oldest recorded recreational activities were from 420 BCE. All different types of cultures from all over the world have had their types of entertainment, in ancient settlements there would be games such as Senet, which was a game from ancient Egypt, it’s just like Scrabble but with symbols instead of letters, and it’s a lot older.
Music and storytelling are also deeply rooted in our culture, and guess what, that’s a form of entertainment as well! Storytelling has been used to give advice and to entertain for so many generations, since the beginning of time we’ve been passing stories down to future generations. Stories are often used to warn others of things that may happen, teach life lessons, and for fun! It’s the same with music; chances are you’ve heard music before. Music is everywhere, from people strumming a guitar in Pike Place Market to music blasting on the radio. Every culture has music and many people find it entertaining to dance and sing to these songs. Another form of entertainment is apps, there are so many and they can all be so much fun! Maybe you’ve caught yourself watching YouTube or idly scrolling through one or another social media platform. And guess what? Things like social media are entertainment! It’s mainly used for entertaining and that’s why so many people use it. Entertainment is so connected to all of us that we simply couldn’t live without it; we’d bore ourselves to death.
In conclusion, you can see why I was so shocked that entertainment was not an option, with something so connected to all of us. All around the world people use entertainment as a way to destress, connect to friends and family, or just to have fun! This is why I think that in the future Ms. Shoults should have an entertainment section available to choose from for future assignments in this class.
I would like to mention that Ms. Shoults did say, “It was not a conscious choice, it was more of an oversight.” when asked why entertainment was not an option so I don’t blame her for the fact it was not there.

This is passive aggressive and I’m here for it.
