MEQUON, WI — A five-vehicle crash on I-43 North in Ozaukee County briefly shut down northbound lanes near Mequon Road on Wednesday evening after a pickup truck struck traffic that had slowed for roadwork, the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies were called to the scene just after 5 p.m. and found that backups had formed because of construction near I-43 North and Pioneer Road. The sheriff’s office said the pickup did not slow down in time, hit two vehicles, and pushed them into two more.
One of the vehicles rolled over in the collision. No life-threatening injuries were reported among the people involved.
Traffic backups from roadwork set the stage for the collision
Investigators said northbound traffic was already slowing because of roadwork in the area when the pickup truck came up behind the line of vehicles. According to the sheriff’s office, the driver failed to reduce speed and struck two cars, creating a chain reaction that involved five vehicles in all.
The crash happened near the Mequon Road interchange, a busy stretch of I-43 North that can see heavy commuter traffic. With lanes restricted by the work zone, the slowdown left drivers with little room to react once the pickup truck entered the backup.
The sheriff’s office said inattentive driving appeared to be the main factor in the wreck. Officials did not report any major injuries at the scene.
Rollover and lane closure disrupted evening travel
The impact caused one vehicle to roll over, adding to the seriousness of the crash and forcing responders to manage both the collision scene and the traffic impact. Northbound lanes at Mequon Road were closed from 5:10 p.m. until about 6:18 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.
That shutdown lasted a little more than an hour and came during the evening commute, when traffic on I-43 is often at its heaviest. The closure was necessary while crews cleared the vehicles and made sure the roadway was safe for reopening.
Officials have not said how much damage each vehicle sustained, but the rollover and the number of cars involved made the response more complicated than a simple fender-bender.
Sheriff's office says alcohol and drugs do not appear to be involved
After reviewing the crash, the sheriff’s office said drugs and alcohol did not appear to be factors. Instead, investigators pointed to inattentive driving as the apparent cause of the chain-reaction collision.
Citations were issued to the pickup truck driver. The sheriff’s office did not release additional details about the driver’s identity or the specific violations tied to the citations.
That distinction matters because the investigation centered on driver behavior rather than impairment. Officials said the crash appears to have started when the pickup failed to react to the slowed traffic ahead.

The response included the Mequon Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol and Southern Ozaukee Fire & EMS, along with the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office. Together, those agencies helped manage the crash scene, control traffic and assist people involved.
Multi-agency responses are common when a crash affects a major highway and includes a rollover. In this case, the closure and the number of vehicles meant crews had to work quickly to clear the roadway and restore traffic flow.
No life-threatening injuries were reported, which likely helped limit the long-term impact of the collision even though it briefly tied up one of the county’s main travel corridors.
