MARTIN COUNTY, FL — Northbound I-95 in Martin County reopened after a deadly early-morning crash that left a Honda driver dead and shut down part of the roadway for hours. Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened Monday morning when a Honda Civic hit the back of a box truck traveling in the same direction.
The collision caused the Honda to catch fire, and troopers said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:05 a.m. The driver’s name has not been released because next-of-kin notification was still pending. The box truck driver, a 37-year-old Miami man, was not injured.
Troopers say the Honda struck the rear of a Hino box truck
According to Florida Highway Patrol, the box truck was a 2027 Hino traveling north in the outside lane on I-95. The Honda, a 2020 Civic, was also heading north, but in the inside lane before the crash.
Troopers said the front of the Honda hit the rear of the truck. After impact, the Honda became fully engulfed in flames. Investigators did not immediately release additional details about why the driver moved into the truck’s path or whether speed, distraction or another factor played a role.
Fire and impact left the Honda driver dead at the scene
The crash was severe enough that the Honda caught fire almost immediately after the collision, according to FHP. The driver was killed before emergency crews could transport them from the scene.
Authorities have not identified the driver publicly. The fatality was confirmed at 4:05 a.m., marking a deadly start to the morning commute along a major interstate corridor that carries heavy traffic through Martin County and the rest of Florida’s Atlantic coast.
Northbound I-95 was shut down for hours after the crash
In the aftermath of the wreck, a stretch of northbound I-95 closed for several hours while crews worked the scene and investigators examined what happened. Traffic disruptions extended through the early morning hours.
Although the roadway later reopened, the closure created delays on one of South Florida’s busiest travel routes. The shutdown underscores how quickly a single crash can tie up interstate traffic, especially when fire and a fatality are involved.
Traffic was diverted to Indiantown Road during the investigation
While the investigation continued, drivers were routed away from the interstate and onto Indiantown Road. That diversion remained in place as officials handled the aftermath of the wreck.
Florida Highway Patrol has not said whether charges or citations are expected. The agency also has not released any information suggesting that weather or road conditions contributed to the crash. For now, the focus remains on determining how the Honda ended up striking the rear of the box truck.
A second crash was reported farther south on I-95 in Palm Beach County
The Martin County wreck came as another I-95 crash was being reported farther south in Palm Beach County. That separate incident blocked two left lanes on southbound I-95 at Exit 50, adding to traffic problems on the interstate corridor.
While the two crashes were different incidents, both affected a major route used by commuters, freight traffic and travelers along Florida’s east coast. Together, they added to the morning’s disruptions on one of the state’s most heavily traveled highways.
