SHERMAN ISLAND, CA — A deadly crash on State Route 160 forced the highway to shut down in both directions near Sherman Island Cross Road early Sunday, after a collision involving a semi-truck and a utility trailer blocked the roadway.
California Highway Patrol said the wreck was first reported around 5:31 a.m. as a head-on collision with all lanes blocked. Investigators later confirmed that at least one person died, and the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene.
CHP also requested chaplain services and an evidence tow as crews worked to clear the area and document the crash. One person was taken to NorthBay Medical Center, according to the agency.
How the crash was first reported and what blocked the road
CHP logs show the collision came in as a head-on crash shortly before dawn. Officials said the semi-truck and utility trailer were obstructing every lane of SR-160 when responders arrived.
The shutdown affected both northbound and southbound traffic near Sherman Island Cross Road. As crews handled the scene, vehicles were turned around on both sides of the closure, including traffic near the Antioch Bridge.
Air operations also responded to help investigators, adding another layer of support while the roadway remained closed. The scene was treated as an active investigation while officials worked through the aftermath of the wreck.
Coroner and tow crews called after fatality confirmed
After the initial response, CHP confirmed that the collision was fatal. That prompted a response from the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, which came to the site to handle the death investigation.
Officials also ordered an evidence tow for a black Ford F-150 and a utility trailer. CHP did not immediately explain how that vehicle fit into the crash sequence, and investigators were still sorting out what happened.
The agency said a black Ford F-250 driver had been identified by about 7:38 a.m., based on CHP logs. No further details were immediately released about the people involved or the condition of the person who was hurt.
Traffic disrupted near the Antioch Bridge as lanes stayed closed
The closure on SR-160 created significant delays for drivers trying to move through the Sherman Island area. With both directions shut down, there was no through traffic while responders and investigators occupied the roadway.
Traffic controls were put in place to turn vehicles around on either side of the closure. That included traffic near the Antioch Bridge, where drivers were redirected away from the blocked stretch of highway.
CHP did not say how long the shutdown would last, but the early-morning closure meant motorists in the region had to find alternate routes while the crash site was processed. The highway remained the focus of the response while authorities documented evidence and cleared the scene.
One person taken to NorthBay Medical Center after the wreck
CHP said one person was transported to NorthBay Medical Center after the collision. Officials did not immediately identify that person or describe the extent of the injuries.
The agency also said there was no additional information right away on the victim, injuries or cause of the crash. That left the fatal wreck under active review as investigators continued collecting details from the scene.
With the coroner involved and the highway closed in both directions, the focus remained on determining how the vehicles came together on SR-160 and what led to the deadly impact.
