Water Main Break Near Blanco Road and Wurzbach Parkway Floods San Antonio’s North Side, Leaves One Apartment Complex Without Water and Closes the Exit in Both Directions

Floodwater covers part of a San Antonio roadway near Blanco Road and Wurzbach Parkway during a water main break

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Crews with the San Antonio Water System were working Tuesday morning to isolate a water main break on the North Side after street flooding was reported near Blanco Road and Wurzbach Parkway.

The break was reported around 7 a.m. and sent water across the roadway. San Antonio police said a car became stuck in the floodwater and a wrecker was called to the scene. The water later receded, but repair work and traffic disruptions continued.

Flooding reported near Blanco Road and Wurzbach Parkway around 7 a.m.

The break was first reported near the intersection of Blanco Road and Wurzbach Parkway, close to the San Antonio International Airport vicinity. At the height of the flooding, a KSAT Connect viewer video showed water covering part of the area.

By later in the morning, the standing water had gone down. Even so, crews remained on site while they worked to control the flow and begin repairs to the broken pipe.

The scene drew a response because the water spread onto the street quickly enough to disrupt traffic and trap at least one vehicle. Police and utility crews both had a role in handling the immediate impact.

Traffic remained limited as crews dug to reach the broken pipe

Repairs required crews to dig into the ground where the pipe failed, which led to lane closures in the area. The Blanco Road exit from Wurzbach Parkway was shut down in both directions while work continued.

Drivers traveling through the North Side corridor faced delays and detours as the closure affected a major connecting route. The utility’s focus was on shutting down the water and isolating the break so repair work could move forward safely.

Temporary road restrictions are common in this type of repair because crews need room for equipment, excavation and access to the damaged line. In this case, the closure affected both directions of the exit rather than only one lane or one side of the roadway.

One nearby apartment complex lost water service

The break did more than flood the street. At least one nearby apartment complex was out of water as crews worked to manage the damaged main.

That meant the break affected both transportation and utility service in the surrounding area. Residents in the immediate vicinity had to deal with the interruption while repairs were underway.

SAWS did not immediately say how many customers were affected beyond the apartment complex mentioned near the scene. The utility’s crews were still working to isolate the problem as the morning went on.

A car was trapped in the floodwater and a wrecker was sent

San Antonio police said a car became stuck in the floodwater during the incident. A wrecker was dispatched to remove the vehicle from the scene.

The stranded car added to the disruption caused by the break, although the water later receded. Police did not report any injuries in the information released about the scene.

The response shows how quickly a water main break can create a chain reaction: flooding, a stuck vehicle, traffic control and repair work all at once. Even after the water dropped, the cleanup and restoration process was still underway.

Why water main breaks can cause sudden street flooding

Water main breaks can spill a large amount of water into a street in a short period of time, especially when the break happens on a busy roadway. When that occurs, utilities often have to cut off service first and then dig to reach the damaged pipe.

That process can leave nearby homes or apartments without water until repairs are completed. It can also force lane closures or exit shutdowns when crews need space to work.

In this case, the immediate concern was stopping the flow, clearing the flooded area and restoring service to affected customers. SAWS said crews were focused on isolating the break, while road closures remained in place around the work zone.
